How to choose back-to-school gear

Size the backpack to the kid: around 20L suits elementary schoolers; middle and high schoolers need a padded sleeve that actually fits their laptop or tablet.
Count lunch compartments: bento boxes like Bentgo and OmieBox portion food for younger kids, while an insulated food jar is the only way hot lunch stays hot.
Straw lids for little kids: straw bottles are spill-safe for young students, but they need brush cleaning — confirm every part is dishwasher-safe before buying.
Label or track everything: backpacks and bottles vanish in week one; name labels cost little, and an AirTag in the bag settles the lost-backpack panic for good.
Check the class supply list first: binders and whiteboards are duplication traps — teachers often specify exact sizes, so buy those after the school list lands.

Who this shelf is for

It fits parents restocking for a new school year, grandparents who ask what a first grader actually needs, and kids building their own list so relatives skip the guesswork. Starting from zero with a kindergartner, work through the kindergarten first-day checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ranked by real wishlist saves as of September 28, 2026, the most popular Back To School picks are: STANLEY IceFlow 2.0 Flip Straw Tumbler with Handle 30 oz, Epson Expression Home XP-4100 Wireless Color Printer with Scanner, Avery Durable View 3 Ring Binders, THERMOS FUNTAINER Water Bottle with Straw, Bentgo Kids Prints Leak-Proof, Jellycat Fergus Frog Bag Charm, Quartet Dry Erase Board, Magnetic Whiteboard 36" x 24", Nike Kids Elemental Backpack (20L), Yumbox Original Leakproof Bento Lunch Box, uniball Zento Gel Pens (4 Count). The full list on this page updates with every refresh.

A correctly sized backpack, a leak-proof lunch box with a matching insulated bottle, a planner or homework whiteboard, basic desk storage, and, for younger kids, a name label and a tracker in the bag. Everything else depends on the grade and school supply list.

Roughly 15–20L for preschool and early elementary, 20–25L for upper elementary and middle school, and 25–30L with a laptop sleeve for high school. The top of the bag should sit two inches below the shoulders and the bottom at the waist.

Bento-style boxes with a silicone-sealed lid such as Bentgo Kids, Yumbox and OmieBox are the most-saved on WishDeck for exactly that reason. OmieBox adds an insulated thermos compartment for warm food.

Yes for forgotten bags on buses or at after-school clubs. It shows the bag's last location in Find My; it is not a live GPS tracker for the child. Kids' smartwatches with GPS are the option for that.

Late July through mid-August has the widest stock and the deepest backpack and lunch-box discounts; tech deals cluster around Labor Day. Buying planners early matters because academic-year editions sell out.
